One of the great things to come out of this class is the exposure to all the new apps and tools that exist that other teachers have found. It’s almost impossible to keep up with all of the types of new tools that are available and when other teachers have used them you can tell when these tools will be useful to you. For instance, I started using ClassDojo to keep data on my students that were on the second tier of SST. This system worked much better for me and I could communicate with parents easily. This enabled me to build a feedback loop between real time data and consequences for the student.
Another great benefit of this class is the experience of teaching ELL students. In the last couple of schools I have been in the ELL students were mostly only in ESOL classes, and I never had any ELL students in my classes as a result. I really enjoyed working with these students. The students I met were motivated and willing to work with me to improve their grades. It was refreshing and kept me motivated to teach them.
The last thing about this class was the provided for me was the opportunity to work with teachers to make their lives easier. My lesson plan project was a result of listening to them talk about the problems with one of our major projects and developing solutions for them to improve the student’s experience and to help them manage the class and the grading. I was interesting to see it from only the teachers’ positions because I was not teaching any of these students this semester directly. I could think about the best solution for all the students without worrying about backlash and whining from the students I was teaching. I really enjoyed the time I had in this class and the discussions that it brought up in my online classroom and my peer’s classrooms.
